The proceeds of all the wonderful WATER DAY activities taking place in Germany, will help to fund a water project of the Welthungerhilfe (WHH) in Ethiopia.
Since 2006, our partner implements and runs water and sanitation programmes in rural areas of the Amhara region. The income of local people is largely based on growing of cereals and livestock breeding. The aim is to reduce poverty in northern Ethiopia and to promote sustainable development.
In discussions with the WHH’s local partner NG, many communities in the region have mentioned supply of drinking water for both people and livestock as one of the main priorities.
In order to give people access to safe drinking water and improve sanitary and hygienic conditions, the WHH works according to the principles of the WASH concept (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), which includes all necessary components.
In addition to providing wells, latrines and protecting natural water holes, the project includes and engages the local people from the start. For example local craftsmen get trained to carry out building work. Proper instructions and training help to increase knowledge and awareness of the beneficiaries, but also that of political leaders responsible for WASH issues.
The provision of clean drinking water and sanitation around the Ethiopean village of Sodo has been greatly improved through VcA funding for building deep drilled wells and the adjacent latrines, showers and wash basins between the years 2006 and 2010.
For the new project in the Amhara region, VcA has commited to a share EUR176,402. So celebrate for Ethiopia!
